Quora is Palo Alto, California-based online knowledge market founded by former Chief Technology Officer of Facebook and present chief executive officer of Quora Adam D’Angelo. Quora aggregates questions and answers on a variety topics and then permits users to team up on them by correcting or editing questions.
In 2008, D’Angelo left facebook and in 2009, he founded Quora along with another facebook employee Charlie Cheever. Quora’s beta version was officially launched for public on June 21, 2010. The same year in March, Benchmark Capital funded Quora with $11 million and in 2011 Quora’s net worth was estimated about $1 billion dollars. According to the reports of Business Insider, Quora received offers of several billion dollars but the founders turned down the offer. By the end of 2011, Quora had half a million users and in the same year, they redesigned website to make navigation system easier and quicker. Some social networking or bookmarking sites like reddit, Yahoo Answers, LinkedIn Answers, Stack Exchange, Formspring, Answerbag and Answers.com, are Quora’s biggest competitors.
Adam D’Angelo has been the student of the California Institute of Technology. From his childhood, he was quite fascinated by computing and technology. He was ranked eighth in the USA Computing Olympiad for high school students in 2001 and in 2005 he was also one of the top 24 finalists in the international Topcoder Collegiate Challenge. Both D’Angelo and Cheever have featured on CNN as one of the smartest figures in technology.
