Terry McMillan, an American author, was born on 18th October 1951 in Port Huron, Michigan. In 1986, she completed her BA in journalism from the University of California, Berkeley. Her passion for writing came at the age of 16, while working at a library. She tried her hand in writing with a love poem, after breaking her first relationship in California.
Her very first book, Mama, was self-published, with which she could do little to make a space in readers’ mind. In 1992, she successfully earned tremendous commercial and critical success with her third novel Waiting to Exhale. By the year of 1996, over three million copies of paperback and more than 700,000 copies of hardcopies had been sold. She finally achieved national attention and her book remained in the The New York Times bestseller list for several months. Her bold as well as provocative writing talent was widely acclaimed by the critics. Her next novel ‘How Stella Got Her Groove Back’ was even more successful. More than 800,000 copies were immediately sold after first printing. She also wrote Disappearing Acts , The Interruption of Everything, the best seller A Day Late and a Dollar Short, and Getting to Happy, the sequel toWaiting to Exhale, that was published on September 7, 2010.
In 1998, She married Jamaican Jonathan Plummer from whom she got inspiration to make it as a mind character in her novel How Stella Got Her Groove Back. In 2005, she filed for the divorce and they got separated after long embarrassments. In 2010, they both came to talk show with Oprah Winfrey and exposed of their partial reconcilement.
